The power of believing you can

Posted by Administrator in Untagged

Administrator

The following information is this weeks strengths tipo from CAPP

Efficacy - People strong in Efficacy are very confident in their own abilities, having a sure belief that they can achieve their goals.

When was the last time you had the self-belief to achieve a goal that seemed unrealistic? People strong in Efficacy have the confidence in their own capability to achieve their goals. We tend not to notice individuals with Efficacy - they always seem to get the job done with their can-do approach. You know instinctively that you can rely on them to get the result you need. Look at the people around you, whether in real life or on television, and see who you can spot who has Efficacy - do some people have an unerring sense of self-belief? Do others seem to question themselves more? What can you learn from them, to implement for yourself in your own life?

If you have Efficacy as a strength, ask yourself how you can put it to best use. Where does your confidence in your ability to do things come from? When has your belief in your ability to do things been most helpful to you? Think about the occasions where your involvement in a project has benefited significantly from your self-belief and confidence. Did your involvement enable others to build confidence in their own abilities?

Be Happier Together - By Using Your Strengths

"I believe the highest success in living and the deepest emotional satisfaction comes from building and using your signature strengths."
-Martin E.P. Seligman, Ph.D.

If you've taken the VIA Survey of Character, you know your own top strengths. But do you know those of the people you love?

The VIA Survey - and the VIA Youth Survey - are free at the non-profit VIA Institute's website. You'll  get a list of your 24 VIA Character Strengths in top-down order. It’s knowledge that helps us see ourselves – and our families and friends – in a new light.

 * Curiosity is your partner’s No. 1 strength. So THAT's why everything you say gets answered with tons of questions!

* Your daughter’s top strength is Bravery? No wonder she seems so reckless sometimes.  Yet think of all the ways her bravery has helped her – and others.
    * Your middle son: Kindness is in his top 5. How great is that!  How does knowing that change the way you see him? How about the way he sees himself?

Do any of your own top strengths surprise the ones closest to you? With that knowledge, can they understand a bit more about your behavior and priorities?

If you want more details, there is an expanded, VIA Interpretive Report (VIR) available for the adult survey at www.viasurvey.org.  It’s $40 ($20 for students). It provides:

    * Multiple graphs showing your strengths with raw scores

Courage - People strong in Courage overcome their fears and do what they want to do in spite of them.

Courage - People strong in Courage overcome their fears and do what they want to do in spite of them.

When most people think of bravery, their minds naturally turn toward stories of heroism such as soldiers at war, or daring rescues by emergency personnel. Few stop and consider the daily occurrences of bravery in our own lives. We tend to overlook the courage it takes to stick up for an underdog at work, to admit a failing to a colleague, or to take a risk in business.

As people around the globe prepare to celebrate St. George's Day on 23 April, it is timely to stop and consider the story as if it were not allegorical. Imagine what it would be like to face down a powerful and dangerous creature, knowing that the life of an innocent person hung in the balance. Imagine the mix of emotions you would feel: fear, uncertainty, anger, resolve and compassion. Imagine what you would have to tell yourself to steel yourself for the fight.

Of course, like St. George, we all have experience in facing down our personal dragons. For some people, it is confronting their fear of flying, while for others it is confronting a supervisor or spouse. We are all called to rise to the occasion in instances where we would rather run away.

People who are strong in Courage are admirable in that they do not let a little discomfort hold them back from doing what they think is right or from trying something new. Many courageous people link their actions directly to what is important to them. So, the next time you are confronted with a metaphorical dragon, try taking stock of your values. Instead of focusing on your fear, concentrate on how your action will help you achieve the things you treasure.

With best wishes,

Robert Biswas-Diener

Positive Psychology News Daily, NY (Jen Hausmann) - April 3, 2007, 1:00 am

On the nights I am lucky enough to put my son to bed, I have learned to treasure a ritual that we established over a year ago, during my first semester as a student in Penn’s MAPP (Master of Applied Positive Psychology) program. Always looking for the “A” in MAPP, I was almost single mindedly focused on “how is this going to matter in the real world?” types of questions. I wouldn’t say I was a “doubting Thomas”, although, looking back, I honestly might have been. Back then, especially for me, the best way to determine how positive psychology “works” was to test out some of the theories in practice.
